Writing our Next Chapter Together

Good morning, students, faculty and staff.

I am very excited to address the University of Minnesota community for the first time in my official capacity as President.

Over these past several months, I have had the pleasure of interacting with countless Minnesotans about important issues impacting their lives and communities. And during those conversations, I am constantly reminded of the critical role our five system campuses play in building a brighter, healthier future for Minnesota and beyond.

I am excited to build upon the extraordinary momentum emanating from our Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester and Twin Cities campuses, each of which makes a distinctive contribution to our state and nation.

Whether you are a student, faculty or staff member, I appreciate how much this University means to you. Our University should be a beacon in this time of global challenges to higher education. As President, I am firmly committed to the core principles of academic freedom and free inquiry, and to fostering an inclusive community in which you are all engaged in defining the future together.

Many of you had an opportunity to hear from me during the presidential search process. Now, I want to hear from you.

I will lead by listening, building trust throughout our community so that together we can write the university’s next bold chapter—one that prioritizes an affordable, world-class education and solidifies our unwavering commitment to the health, wellbeing and prosperity of all Minnesotans.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Cunningham, M.D.
President, The University of Minnesota
