Important systemwide leadership updates
Dear Colleagues,
It is with mixed emotions that I write to inform you that Melisa López Franzen has decided to leave the University of Minnesota to pursue other leadership opportunities.
Melisa joined the University in August 2023, bringing a wealth of experience as a state legislator, and in a variety of other leadership roles in advocacy and public service. As Executive Director of Government and Community Relations, Melisa led lobbying and advocacy efforts on behalf of the University of Minnesota System—at the State Capitol, in Washington, D.C., and across Minnesota—ensuring the distinct value of our five campuses and countless other statewide locations was recognized and reinforced.
During her time at the University, Melisa has substantially strengthened our Government and Community Relations team, assembling a group of expert individuals with a wealth of experience and relationships. They are passionate and dedicated to sharing the tremendous impact our University has on the state, nation and world with elected leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders. Under Melisa’s leadership, the team has expanded and strengthened our relationships at the local, state and federal level, advancing our mission as a leading public research institution and one of Minnesota’s most important assets.
I am so very grateful for Melisa’s leadership and dedication to the University’s mission and strategic objectives. Please join me in thanking Melisa for her many contributions and wishing her the best in her future endeavors.
As we transition, I am excited to announce that Christine Kiel will serve as interim leader of Government and Community Relations, effective February 24.
Christine, who currently serves as Director of State Relations, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this interim role. Her leadership will ensure continuity in our advocacy efforts, and I am confident that our Government and Community Relations team will only continue to thrive.
I look forward to working with and supporting this team so they can further implement a detailed plan to strengthen relationships with elected leaders, advocate strongly for systemwide needs, and navigate federal guidance and local government issues.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Cunningham
President
