Office for Student Affairs Update

Dear colleagues,

We are writing to share an organizational update that will strengthen our collective efforts to support students and advance the University’s mission. Effective July 1, 2026, the Office for Student Affairs will transition reporting lines to the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.

This change reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of student academic experiences and the many services, programs and relationships that contribute to their learning, wellbeing, development, engagement and success. By aligning Student Affairs back within the Provost’s portfolio, as it was prior to 2020, we can further strengthen collaboration across academic and student support functions, enhance coordination and create new opportunities to provide students with a more seamless and holistic university experience.

This decision follows careful consideration and thoughtful discussion about how best to support our students and the outstanding work of the Student Affairs team. Across higher education, institutions are increasingly recognizing that student success is shaped not only by what happens in the classroom, but also by the many partnerships that support students throughout their academic journey — from career and wellness services to community standards, student activities and other critical support areas.

Importantly, this transition underscores the central role Student Affairs plays at a leading research university. Student Affairs is a vital partner in advancing our academic mission and fostering an environment in which students can thrive. This change is intended to further elevate the contributions of Student Affairs to the student experience and the life of the University.

Over the coming weeks, we will work closely with Student Affairs staff and campus partners to ensure a smooth and collaborative transition.

We are deeply grateful for the leadership, expertise and dedication of Vice President Phillips, who will report to the Provost and continue to serve as a member of the President’s cabinet. The work across Student Affairs makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our students every day. We look forward to building on that strong foundation and continuing our shared commitment to student success.

Thank you for your partnership and support.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Cunningham
President
