A strong foundation for the future of academic medicine in Minnesota

Dear colleagues,

On Monday, we reached an important milestone that secures the long-term sustainability of the University of Minnesota Medical School, provides greater stability to you as clinicians, faculty and researchers, and reflects an unwavering commitment to innovative academic medicine and patient care in Minnesota.

Our new 10-year partnership agreement among the University of Minnesota, M Physicians and Fairview Health Services maintains continuity of care for patients in our current academic facilities in the Twin Cities. Reaching this point required all organizations to commit more deeply to the benefits of an outcome we share for the health of our community. The result is a foundation that more fully supports your work, secures M Physicians as the University’s designated faculty practice, and prepares us all to meet Minnesota’s healthcare needs – together – well into the future.

Many of you chose academic medicine because of a deep passion for providing outstanding clinical care, teaching the next generation and engaging in life-saving research. The continued partnership between the University and M Physicians provides a clear, secure path forward to position you to deliver on those important missions.

We are grateful for Attorney General Keith Ellison and our mediation team, Judge Tom Fraser, Lois Quam and Dr. Bill McGuire for their steadfast efforts to help us reach this next chapter.

In the upcoming weeks, we will share more details and next steps. Until then, thank you for your continued commitment and engagement in building a healthier Minnesota.
