Speeches and Spotlights
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
It’s been a particularly busy couple of weeks on our Twin Cities campus, and I want to thank, first of all, Vice President for University Services Mike Berthelsen and his entire team for their excellent work, remarkable patience, and for the very long hours of work they put in.
First, we had a massive snowfall that required some tough decisions and a Herculean effort to plow and shovel out our campus, and that was done with lightning speed.
Lori Carrell named University of Minnesota Rochester Chancellor: President Kaler's message to the UMR community
Dear UMR Community,
I am pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Lori Carrell as chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester, pending approval by the Board of Regents at its February meeting.
I am confident that Dr. Carrell will provide strong leadership for UMR’s unparalleled education in the health sciences, including its integrated, hands-on curriculum, personalized attention, and innovative learning experience in the dynamic Rochester community.
The University hosts a wide variety of events, welcoming tens of thousands of people to campus each and every day. We strive to meet the unique needs for each and every event, and the event scheduled for later this month is no different. When working to accommodate a venue request, our top priority is and will always be the safety and security of our University community, and with that in mind the University works with organizers to determine a location that meets everyone's needs to the best of our ability.
To the University of Minnesota community,
A month from today, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is set to end, and I wanted again to express my concern and offer my support for our DACA students, faculty and staff.

To the University Community,
I am pleased to report that the U.S. House and Senate have agreed to remove the graduate tax provision from any final federal tax reform bill. This is a victory for students here at the University of Minnesota and across the country.
Thank you, Chair McMillan, and good morning everyone.
As you know, I returned Tuesday night from a very productive visit to China. From Hong Kong to Shenzhen to Shanghai to Beijing during six days on the ground, I:
President Kaler sent this message to the entire University community and a similar message to civic, business and political leaders across the state.
As the federal tax bill works its way through the U.S. Senate, our graduate students who work as teaching (TA) and research assistants (RA) urgently need our help. Right now.
President Kaler's remarks to the 10th annual Equity and Diversity Breakfast: "Harness the spirit in this room to do better"
Good morning everyone, thank you Interim Vice President Goh, and thank you for your leadership of OED.
We’ve gathered once more to celebrate our engagement with and commitment to, equity, diversity, and inclusion. At the same time, in these troubling times, I also feel a need to use these moments together to contemplate our concerns, and address our challenges.
But, because it’s so early in the morning, first, let’s celebrate!
