Important health/healthcare update: preliminary agreement reached

Dear faculty and staff,

These are extremely challenging times for Minnesota and for our University community. As difficult as these times are, it is important to lift up and share our successes together. The news below affects so many, across our University and state. Its broad impact and the need to move forward prompts us to share it, while respecting the moment we are in as a University, community and state.

Last month, the University entered mediation with M Physicians and Fairview, committed to good-faith negotiations and achieving a win-win-win solution that benefits our health and healthcare practitioners, students, and patients now and in the future. Today, we are pleased to share that an agreement has been reached that brings clarity to various dimensions of our relationship for the next 10 years.

Pending approval by the Board of Regents, this agreement provides clarity on the financial mechanisms that help fund both the University of Minnesota Medical school and the research we do that leads to life-saving and life-sustaining cures. It also brings stability to the doctors who both treat patients and train the next generation of health professionals and assures that they can practice and teach in modern, updated facilities.

This agreement is an important step in our long-term vision of improving health and healthcare for all Minnesotans—a vision that closely aligns with our Elevate Extraordinary 2030 strategic roadmap. That roadmap advances the University’s 175-year legacy as a land-grant University with a mission to serve all of Minnesota for decades to come.

Thank you for your commitment to the University of Minnesota—one of our state’s most vital assets. You inspire confidence in our shared future every day.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Cunningham
President
