President's welcome back message — students

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Dear Students,

Thank you for infusing our campuses with great new-semester energy, and welcome back!

Here are a few important items I want to share:

  • This week, I will be presenting new initiatives to hold down tuition for you and your families and strengthen our extraordinary academic and research programs. I will be talking more about these ideas in the days and weeks to come. You may hear about them in your local media or campus news outlets.
  • To help keep the University strong, we have launched an exciting campaign to engage students. We are gathering names of U supporters via smartphones and iPads, and plan to deliver those thousands of names to the State Capitol. Students are our most effective advocates. If you want to add your name, do it here. We'll keep you posted on developments.
  • I'd love for you to follow me on Twitter—@PrezKaler—and keep track of all kinds of comings and goings on the University's Facebook page.
  • We also like to have a little fun. Take a look at this video we showed to our first-year Twin Cities campus students at Convocation. I hope you enjoy it.

We are a remarkable University. Across our campuses, we have students like you from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and from 141 other nations–ranging from Afghanistan to Latvia to Zimbabwe. You are a member of an incredible, global, academic community that is geared to prepare you for a lifetime of learning and for the jobs of the future so you can engage with diverse communities–be they in Minnesota or around the world–in innovative and productive ways. Please, take advantage of all the opportunities this great University offers.

Thanks for listening. I wish you a challenging, thoughtful, successful, and fun semester.

Eric W. Kaler
